A New Approach to Goal Setting: Trying out the 12 Week Year

Including a STEP by STEP tutorial using Notion

What is the 12 Week Year?

It’s a time management system made to get more done in a shorter amount of time. Rather than looking at 12 months and automatically assuming you have plenty of time and end up procrastinating, having a 12-week time period will fill you with a sense of urgency to get more things done.

Why I’m doing it (and why you should too!)

I dealt with having uncompleted goals many times. Those incompletions were due to procrastination, no time management, discipline, or forgetting about them. When I discovered the 12-week system, I saw it helping others stay on track with their goals and how it could help me with mine!

How to set it up (with Notion)

First, you must VISUALIZE.

Without vision, you can’t go anywhere. It would be like trying to go to the airport while blind. Make sure you’re specific when envisioning who and where you want to be. Choose 3-4 areas of your life to focus on for the next 12 weeks. Here are some prompts to help you visualize:

  • Where do I want to be in a year?

  • Who do I want to become?

  • What accomplishments will this person have?

  • What habits will this person have?

EX: I visualize having a stronger and more intimate relationship with the Lord, having a faster turnover when sprinting, and having an enjoyable, successful, monetized YouTube channel.

Next, BRAINSTORM & WRITE them down

Try to think of all the things that you would need to do to step into that vision. After gathering your ideas, write them down on a physical piece of paper. When you do this you’ll be more likely to go through with them.
Ask: What is needed for me to become that person?

EX: To become the successful D1 sprinter I want to be, it’ll require taking recovery, hydration, and workouts seriously. I’ll also need to do out-of-practice workouts such as core exercises and hip mobility.

Finally, Break them down into tasks

Now that you’ve written down your goals, we need to make a plan in order to reach them. Think about what you’ll need to do each day to achieve them and then implement them into your life. Don’t forget to be specific with the dates and times.

EX: I’ll do a hip mobility routine 4 days a week at 5 PM. I’ll upload at least one blog bi-weekly and will make at least 3 Pinterest pins to go along with each one.

All that’s left to do is to start! Wishing you the best of luck on your journey!

TIPS💡

#1. Use the template SMART goals when writing.

Specific
Measurable
Achievable
Relevant
Time-Bound

Example of SMART goals:

Make at least a $200 profit from selling digital products on Etsy by the start of August. The store will be up and running with 10 listings before July. I’ll advertise these products through Pinterest pins and community apps. Achieving this goal will put my shop on a steady growth track toward a solid passive income.

#2. Stay disciplined.

Motivation can’t keep you running forever. Eventually, you’ll experience moments where you just want to quit or procrastinate. To prevent this, remember your vision and the person you want to become. Discipline is the bridge between where you are now and where you want to be. Choose to push through the laziness!

#3. Keep track.

After the end of each week check and log in how many tasks you’ve completed and how you feel. These reviews will give you a better perspective on whether or not you’ll reach your goals and if you have made too many or too few tasks.

#4. Invite God into your journey.

Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.

Proverbs 3:5-6

When you submit to God your plans, He will assist you throughout your whole journey. You can remain worry-free knowing that it’s all in His hands. Whether things are going your way or not, remember that God is working out all things for your good.
